Feb 17 Blog

For those of you that watched, I hope you enjoyed All-Star Weekend. I didn’t get to see much of it but I did see the highlights of all of Dwight Howard’s dunk. He was spectacular, to say the least. Honestly though, I’ve seen him do all of those dunks in practice before. My favorite dunk that he performed was the one where he caught the ball in the air with his left hand, threw it off the backboard to his right hand, and then dunked it in. It might not have been his most creative, but that dunk is next to impossible. He did it a couple weeks ago in practice and I was blown away. Congrats to him on winning the dunk contest.

My all-star break was a little more relaxed – I spent four days in the Bahamas. I had a blast. Except for Saturday, the weather wasn’t great. I didn’t get that much sun, unfortunately. My girlfriend came with me and we had a very nice time. It was kind of weird though because there were several NBA players at the resort as well, including a couple of my teammates. I didn’t feel like I completely got away (I’ll save that for when I go backpacking in a remote country haha). I saw a few former Duke players who are now in the NBA and got to catch up wth them. Being away from the game was nice, but as soon as I woke up Sunday morning I was ready to get back to work. I headed into the gym tonight to shoot, condition, and lift. I feel rejuvanated and ready to play out the latter part of the year. Much has been written recently about trade requests and the fact I’m not going to get traded and not gonna play. I understand I have to be patient and I truly believe everything will work itself out in the end. In the meantime, I’ve just got to stay ready.

Duke had a tough loss tonight. I didn’t get a chance to watch but judging from the box score it looked like we really struggled to score. Despite the loss tonight, I’m really excited about this year’s team. We have a great group and they are getting better. I was a little surprised they lost tonight but Wake is always a tough place to play and I’m sure it was an emotional night for the Deacons.

I hope you guys enjoyed the golf video- that was a legit birdie putt. It was a 150 yard par 3 and I hit a pitching wedge over water to the front of the green. What a putt haha! In all seriousness, I know my golf game needs a lot of work. I’ve never taken any lessons so I’ve got a lot of room for improvement. I’m sure I’ll play a lot this summer and hopefully step my game up.

Let me know what you guys want me to start adding to the site. One thing I wanna do is start linking different articles or videos that I see online and find interesting – I’ll give you my take on things and then maybe you can share your thoughts. Be easy. Keep it grimy. Or clean. Whichever you prefer. I’m out.

Top Five Favorite Dunk Contest Participants:

1) Jordan- please, he’s easily the most graceful athlete I’ve ever seen. He’s the definition of a baller.
2) Dwight- he got robbed last year but found vindication this year in the form of a superman cape.
3) Vince- craziest dunks I’ve ever seen.
4) Brent Barry- a white guy winning the dunk contest??
5) Chris Anderson- “Birdman” as they call him. Another white dunker. He had a rougher time then Brent Barry. Who can forget him trying the same dunk 37 times? Thank you, NBA, for putting a time limit on the dunks now.

Yes, I’m interested in updates!

I don’t get to see as many of the Magic games as I’d like, because I am in Atlanta, so I try to catch up on your site. Its great to hear that your injuries are fading and your playing time is increasing. I am a HUGE Duke fan. I’m glad I had the chance to see you play your senior year, against Georgia Tech. I know only great things will come to you in your young NBA career.

Beka | on 29/2/08

Also, congrats on the 10 points the other night. A little shaky, but keep practicing…you’ll get back in the swing of things the more you play. :-)

Beka | on 29/2/08

I was told that since today is Leap Day it’s considered ok for a girl to propose to a guy, but I didn’t want to be one of ‘those girls’ so I thought I’d just say Happy Leap Year!

Kat | on 28/2/08

Awesome that you got decent minutes last night & scored double digits. I was so shocked when I got in my car & turned the radio on during the 2nd quarter & heard them say your name. Figures game was being shown on FSN as opposed to Sunshine. One question though, what’s up w/ the missed free throws ;)

Heath Tucker | on 26/2/08

hello jj. this is heath tucker from pilot mtn north carolina. me and my youngest son nathan are huge fans of yours. we love duke basketball, and did get to meet you a couple of times. anyway, i found this website today, and really enjoyed reading over everything. we do hope the best for you, we love you and thanks for all the memories. nathan my son is handicap, and during your days at duke me and him watched every game. you were the highlight, i have precious memories of me and him sitting in the floor and watching everygame. with our junk food and duke apparrel on. thanks again for those memories and hope to meet you again one day.

Stephanie | on 24/2/08

Hey JJ,

I wanted to stop by and say that I was sorry that you weren’t traded before the deadline. As you already know you have fans that will follow you where ever you go. I must say I had to laugh out loud after reading SVG talk about how the press ask him more about you than Dwight Howard or anyone else on the team.

I want to leave you with this… you dominated the game at DUKE and you will dominate again in the NBA. Keep praying and believing.

Lots of love & Happiness.

Stephanie

Retrho | on 24/2/08

Dear JJ

my name is Jasper Eden and i’m from the Netherlands. I don’t want to waste too much of your time saying how i good i think you are, just know me and my friends are huge fans.

my question: i have a streetbasketballteam for a couple of years now, called Retrho (meaning REspect, TRust & HOnour). Since january we’ve made it a business, organising basketballclinics for the Dutch youth. Sadly, basketball isn’t too big here in Holland, but we’re trying to be an example for the children and teaching them how much joy and discipline basketball can give them.
My question might be a bit strange, but would you please consider giving us a little shout out????
audio/video/photo or just a simple line in an email to inspire our fans, would be incrediblebly appreciated.
i really hope to hear from you,
keep up the good work, i’m sure your time to shine will come. and you’ll be great.

respect, trust and honour,

Jasper Eden

Good to see you are staying positive about your role with the team. You are still the one player my kids get most excited to see play, My 7 yr old son is always asking when you can get into the game and start making 3 pointers!

Keep up the positive thoughts – it will pay off.

Chandler | on 22/2/08

Duke needs to get better at defence. They gave up 96 points to Miaimi. Duke is better then that. I hope Duke can win the rest of their games.

Megan | on 22/2/08

I too, think its awesome that you have a girlfriend. Im sure shes a great person because what we all see, you are a great person! Really happy that you are happy in life besides the whole not playing thing.. keep your head up, we all know you will shine, just got wait it out..
FTK— for the kids sorry THON is this weekend and 46 hours of dancing combatting childhood cancer.. I’m sure you can appreciate that..

diana | on 22/2/08

it sucks that duke lost again and the magic i will be in orlando on the 4 so excited hope you get to play. im still so upset that you have a gf.

Evan | on 21/2/08

Hey JJ! How are you? So tell me. How did duke lose again? This is crazy. I mean Miami? No way. they must’ve cheated. JK. I’m going to the Duke vs. St. John’s game on sat. this will be my second game this season. they better win this one.
so the bahamas, huh? They are great. I’ve been twice. So I play b-ball, and I really want play at duke when I’m older. What advice would you give to someone trying to be that good? Because I know you practiced alot to get to duke. Last night was one of the worst nights for me in sports. Magic lost, duke lost, pistons lost. At least carolina won. geeez. well, I’ll be checking your site for updates. keep on chuggin’ along. You should make a video of you shooting the ball. just shoot threes and stuff. I could watch that for hours. Be patient. At least you’re not on the court getting hurt. that would stink. later.

Eric J | on 21/2/08

Hey JJ, I’m pretty sure I recall talk about you enjoying video games. As we’re in the same age group I’m sure you play games like NBA Live 08 or Halo 3… Do you ever play as yourself in NBA Live? Does it feel weird? More importantly, if you play quick pick mode, who do you take as your 10 players and on which NBA team? Was wondering if you can add how you’re doin on your video game skills on this site haha…

Other than that, Hang in there bro, people respect the fact you apply your faith in life very well (in my opinion). I’m basically a player fan and you’re up there to me in terms of respectability (eg: Jordan, KG, etc)

All the best to the remainder of your season in 08
(sorry though, I’m still gonna root for the Celtics!... it’d be sweet if you were on that team though LOL!)

jeromie | on 20/2/08

I dont understand why your not getting any P.T you are the best pure shooter to come out of college, in an offensive minded game (THE NBA). There is no way you shouldn’t get 20 min a game.-I am pretty mad tonight duke just dropped another game, this time to miami….WOW. Duke is to good for this kind of skid.Everyone is wright about the free throws, however I think there only real problem is the lack of a good big man. Lance Thomas does pretty good with what the lord gave him but hes not a true big man. Mcroberts made a huge mistake!!!the future is bright, the freshmen are awesome (singler, king, smith)

Francis | on 20/2/08

My not so close encounter with you in Toronto:

Being completely frustrated that you weren’t playing- I was determined to salvage the night by meeting/getting an autograph from you. I was sitting 20 rows up/endzone and managed to make my way down to the 1st row opposite the players bench with about 3 min left in the game. I was only seperated by the 2 people sitting beside you on the bench. I probably could have got your attention but I didn’t want to get busted by security. Anyhow, the seats right behind you were empty but like the lion in the Wizard of Oz I lacked the courage to make the move. Instead, I decided to wait until the last buzzer to walk up and ask you to sign my Duke jersey. Granted, you probably aren’t even allowed to sign autographs but a handshake would have been nice. The buzzer sounds…I am 1½ metres away from you and the entire Magic bench jumps up and sprints the opposite direction. It was as if the first person back to the locker room would get a kiss from Jordana Brewster…it was that fast. It was as if you were a shooting star. Sorry, I really wanted to use that pun. …and that’s my story.

Claire | on 20/2/08

Hey JJ, Got Redick?
nice seeing you at the Palace. I was so glad you got some playing time. I was jumping and screaming. I was gonna go try to get a picture after or something but you didn’t look very happy. I got there an hour early to try to find you but you didn’t come out till 15 min before. Nice seeing you noticed me again, thanks. It makes me unbelievably happy. Good luck in the future, and I hope things get better every day for you. Keep hope alive.

RayK | on 20/2/08

hey JJ. wow some tough losses for duke here recently. im sure coach k will get them straightened out soon enough.
its always good to get away sometimes and im glad you got an oppurtunity to take a breather. keep working hard. we love the site by the way!
Strength and prayers!

L | on 20/2/08

keep it up jj and stay positive!
i like that phrase… Free JJ.
you have so much talent, i dont want to see it go to waste…
as soon as you can sign with a new contract, GET OUT OF ORLANDO.
preferably, come to houston :]
I want to see the jj i know who rains 3’s!!!!!!!!
there are so many fans out there who’ve got your back jj.
keep it real.

have faith.

JJ Wannabe | on 20/2/08

People, of course he has a girlfriend, he is JJ fetching Redick for heaven’s sake.
Duke has to shoot better from the line- they are horrible—-come on boy’s they are free-make them.
Free JJ

Ann | on 20/2/08

So I’m curious, who gave Dwight the idea to use the Superman cape? He said a teammate gave him the idea

Jenn | on 20/2/08

JJ, I’m sure you’re already doing this but ignore those that are making comments on you having a girlfriend, that is really terrible. Anyway, I hope you enjoyed the Bahamas, I’ve been there and it’s really beautiful. I work at a PR firm in Glenwood South in Raleigh, obviously in the heart of ACC country and my fellow Duke fans there have begun wearing Duke apparel, namely your jersey, to work whenever there’s a big game on a weekday. We are really rooting for you in Orlando as well. Hey, if you’re in the area, feel free to stop by, we aren’t hard to find : )

Dee | on 20/2/08

Yeah, I have to go with the earlier suggestion of a couple of desktop wallpapers on the site. Maybe some other general pictures of yourself (we don’t need to see the gf, though; sorry, hun), pics of whatever. And your poetry, as someone’s mentioned. Anything you find inspirational past, present, future. Some funny Duke/Coach K stories. Well, I could probably go on with useless suggestions. We play Miami tonight – GO DUKE!!

Renee | on 20/2/08

I apologize if you answered this already but i just logged onto this site of yours for the first time today and just spent the last hour reading (and cracking up) at your blogs. Anyway I LOVE your top 5 lists—you mentioned that you and your brother started this….did something trigger you to start this? I ask because years ago when the John Cusack movie “High Fidelity” came out I was living/working in hawaii and me and my friend went to the movie and in it John Cusack makes Top 5 lists throughout the movie so this kinda became a thing with me and my friends—top 5’s—we do this ALL THE TIME so i am happy to see that i am not the only freak (i mean that affcetionately) out there that does this…LOL!

Love the blogs, keep them coming and love your positive attitude—i’ll ned my comment with my fav quote — “The world needs dreamers and the world needs doers. But above all else, the world needs dreamers that do!”

Kyle | on 19/2/08

My biggest fear for Duke this year in the tourney is this: FREE THROWS!!! Just like the Pitt game, the jumpers were not falling. Any time you shoot 52% from the foul line, your bound to lose. Any way you can give them some lessons?

Jamie | on 19/2/08

JJ,
I am, in fact, glad to hear you have a girlfriend. Life is much more worthwhile when you have someone special to share it with. I’m sure you both make each other very happy.

I won’t even comment on the Duke game. I still can’t go there without my gut wrenching into knots.

Keep up the hard work and training!! It will all pay off, you must believe that!

J

BlueMagic | on 19/2/08

JJ wannabe: do i know you? your comment by saying “free jj” reminds me of something…

Anyway, JJ, keep it up! You are a true inspiration :]

and so you have a girlfriendd….
bummer.

Rebecca | on 19/2/08

Ooohhh…one more thing. Can you share some of your poetry on the website? I love what was published before. I can’t remember if that was in Sports Illustrated or ESPN. Thanks again for being awesome to your fans!

Rebecca

Rebecca | on 19/2/08

Hey JJ!

As I have said numerous times…thank you for sharing with your fans..this is fun!! Sounds like you had fun in the Bahamas. I’ve been there on a cruise, and of course felt like I had to buy one of those hand made flutes from the little children that approach you when you get off the boat….but I enjoyed it! I love the website. The golf video is awesome! Can you put some JJ Redick ring tones and/or wallpaper on the site?

Have a blessed week!

Rebecca

Jordan | on 19/2/08

hey jj i am ur biggest fan i just wanted to tell u that u need to go to a team where u can perform or else u will just be another assistant coach on coach k`s bench nothin wrong with that just sayin u r better than that and u know ur better than that u will have a bright nba career just get on a team where you will have the oppurtunity.

Nicole | on 19/2/08

I absolutely can’t believe the Duke loss. It was worse than when they loss to Pittsburgh! All 5 of Duke’s starters were gone and they were so tired that Nelson airballed a 3. Anyway, I bet your get away was fun, I wish I could get away for a few days. Youll find your way in basketball, as long as you keep loving it. I know it. I found no point in even voting for Dwight, I knew it was over. He was awesome! but seriously, keep doing what your doing…be strong

Kestrel | on 19/2/08

well i’m glad that you had a good time over all-star weekend and now its back to work but i’ll tell you that you will be a star in the NBA and you will start (soon i hope) and get your Duke Mins. back but untill then you have to do what you do and stay amazing! Love And Peace always. Kestrel

Tim | on 19/2/08

JJ youre time is coming soon bank on it… magic fans will get to see what you can do soon enough… please stay positive we need you on the magic… its great to see how hard you work no matter what… its an honor to have you on the team

Beatrice | on 19/2/08

I can hear every girls heart breaking when you mentioned a girlfriend. I’m glad everybody got some much needed time off. There’s really nothing like doing nothing for a couple of days.

Daniela | on 19/2/08

HEy JJ, hang in there! Keep on having faith and everyhthing will work out the way it is supposed to. Remember that you have fans pulling for you every step of the way! Keep working hard! PEACE out

john finnerty | on 19/2/08

hey JJ,

this is christina finnerty’s older brother john. or as she calls me “johnny”. just wanted to say i enjoy the site and following your career, man. you belong in the league and you’ll get your shot. loved the golf blog. didn’t your friend in the video play college football?

later

cq | on 19/2/08

I’m with Dia… I’m kinda let down that you have a girlfriend!

chadley brassfield | on 18/2/08

i just wanna say it sux that ur not getting to play next to jordan to me you are the greatest player ever i idolize ur game and just bought the “betterbasketball” dvd so im excited about getting that also good luck bro…

JJ wannabe | on 18/2/08

can you dunk?
have you ever dunked in a game?

You need to get to a team that allows you to the be the Steve Kerr to MJ—-18-25 min and 6-10 shots…

Tell the Magic to let you gol—-“Free JJ”

Joko | on 18/2/08

Hey, u hanging tough in da bench?! About the thing u said about ideas u could do 4 ur website, well, could u post a video of u just shooting?Please…..........

pb | on 18/2/08

still mad about the duke loss. had a feeling it was going to be a bad night…not sure why but i did. i can’t blame the whole thing on lousy calls by the refs…there were some, don’t get me wrong…but the guys just all seemed off their game. and the poor shooting from the line didn’t help either! hopefully the next game goes better and they come out strong to get the win.
i’m glad you were able to get away for a few days and just relax. the bahamas sound nice right about now…then again, any where warm is better than massachusetts right now! ( iam not a fan of winter.)
keep staying positive about the whole playing thing. be ready and when the time comes show everyone what you’re made of. your fans have faith in you and sooner or later your team will too. hang in there and take care!

Claire | on 18/2/08

Well what do you think about all five starters fouling out in the Duke/Wake game? I’ve never seen that before in my life…so i tried to laugh the loss off because it just seemed completely ridiculous. I know your list is all from NBA dunk contest participants but where would you measure Gerald Henderson and Josh McRoberts in there? They are two of the sickest dunkers I’ve ever seen. Josh more so in his freshman year w/ you. & Gerald just seems to amaze me more and more every day.

I’ll be at the game tomorrow in Detroit!!!!! Look for me first row across from the visitors bench. haha. Let’s pray you PLAY! Well if not, just show me your stuff during warm ups…i miss seeing you drain those 30 footers.

T.S. | on 18/2/08

Get Buckets

Dee | on 18/2/08

Keep adding home vids. We love the golf shots!! :) You could start posting favorite quotes . . .

danny | on 18/2/08

hey jj i just noticed whenever scheyer has a bad game duke plays bad keep fighting for playing time

Paul | on 18/2/08

Bahamas sounded like a good time, hopefully you get play soon, I need some 3’s on my fantasy team haha. Duke just didn’t shoot well and i think they live and die by the 3 ball this year but the loss will wake them up no pun intended. Keep being the man and Do Work.

Jenna | on 18/2/08

Hey JJ. Thanks for updating your site. About the not playing thing, all you need to do is keep practicing and do the best you can durin practice. Just keep having faith. And be grateful that your practicing. I would KILL to be out there just shooting around and working on things I need to work on.
Oh yeah and about adding things to your site, I REALLY like the poems that you wrote back when you were in college. Because of you, I’ve started writing poetry. But yeah, I think you should add some of that. And maybe some more Top 5’s.
Well good luck in your next few games, and have some faith dude!

dia | on 18/2/08

im just mad you have a girlfriend i kinda hope you didnt have fun

LML | on 18/2/08

I had totally forgotten about Chris Anderson’s dunk attempts.LOL!!! But now that you mention it, although he didn’t have as much attempts as Chris, Nate Robinson sure “attempted” a lot when he won a few years ago.

However, glad to hear you’re still keeping your head up and staying ready.

Carolann | on 18/2/08

Love you, hate your girlfriend (kidding). I’ve been talking to Steve Kerr to try and get you to the Suns. He loves your work ethic and game. Here’s hoping that might happen soon!

Don’t feel bad when the Magic fans want you to play. They just know you are better than the other SG’s on that team!

Keep being you, that’s all that matters.
Carol

Evan | on 18/2/08

I’m suprised spud webb (5’ 8”) didn’t make your list of winners. anyway.
the duke loss was ridiculous. the refs were unbelievable. i don’t know if you saw some of the calls but they were why duke lost. yeah. bad game. I was just in carolina this weekend at a youth retreat with my youth group. i broke my arm on sat. too. all day I had looked forward to playing b-ball with the guys. so when I got to the gym it was really disapointing. I had broken my arm just a couple of hours before that too. the first thing I thought was “ what would jj do in a time like this?” so i started shooting with one arm. I started hitting swishes from 10 feet out.
I almost one a game of knock-out against some high schoolers too. it was great!
good luck in orlando. we’re rooting in VA. keep it up. god has a plan. read the story of job. it should be a good one at this point. you should make a bracket style voting competition for us to vote for our favorite jj moments or duke games or something. that woud be fun. good luck. have fun.

shell | on 18/2/08

Ugh! I couldn’t watch the Duke game. I had a feeling there might be an upset and I was afraid I’d throw the remote control through the TV. Glad you had fun in the Bahamas despite the weather.

nate4 | on 18/2/08

You were pretty pumped up when u got that birdie, that was an awsome moment. well i really sad that you arn’t getting traded, that was a very tough lost for duke, but at least they beat up on carolina, that was the highlight of my month. that was a great win. thats really great that you got away to some place nice, that must be really nice.

StephinNC | on 18/2/08

I am sure half your female fans are crying over the fact you now have a girlfriend. But in all seriousness, I am happy for you. Strangely enough I have prayed that you would find someone with good morals and values like you have. I hope you don’t like the party girl type because that is not what you need a this stage in your career. Good luck with your relationship. Also, glad to hear you were able to get away to the Bahamas.

I would love for you to post your input on the presidential candidates and who you would like to see in office in 2009.

I think it would be nice to get to know your thoughts about the issues we face in our country.

Take care & Happy.

Kat | on 18/2/08

I think Dwight’s dunks were the most creative & I voted for him as many times as I could in 5 minutes. The Bahamas must not have the greatest weather this time of year. I took a cruise to the Bahamas a few weeks ago, & I too was disappointed to not come back w/ the nice tan I had hoped to have upon my return. Keep working hard & eventually Stan will see your talent& play you. Good to see you try to keep good spirits.

Lynne King | on 18/2/08

J. J. I did enjoy your golf video, but one thing that puzzled me was that when you went up to the tee and your friend announced you, he said that you were from Charlottesville. I thought you were from Roanoke. I was born and raised in Bedford so I am familiar with the area. I know that the two locations are not that close to one another. So, could you clear that up for me.
Keep up the hard work and stay ready, your day WILL COME. I’m sure of it.

Anthony | on 18/2/08

Hey JJ I was wondering if you also like to watch golf on TV as well?

pong | on 18/2/08

hi JJ!! i just got home from work today..can’t believe that duke lost against wake forest.. we really struggled and hello?? zero points from jon scheyer..could not imagine that one..and all the starting 5 graduated, sigh.. i would be great if u can share with us interesting links here..i’m looking forward to it..i like brent barry’s dunk too, i suddenly remember that one..lol..as always, good luck and God bless!!

JJ. Like the site. Keep positive, you will get your chance and than all will see. Keep on practicing hard and the moment will come. Take care

diana | on 18/2/08

you made me so sad and disappointed. i cant believe duke lost and howard dunks were amazing!!
