January 22 blog

I just got back from a nice little run in my neighborhood. Sometimes, it’s nice to go for a run and just think about things. Also, it’s always nice to get a little extra conditioning in. We had today off from practice so I got up early this morning and played 18 holes of golf. I actually hit the ball pretty well (straight) so that was good. We are taking off to go up to Memphis to play the Grizzlies tomorrow. I’m excited because it’s going to be a short little trip- Memphis then Detroit. We’ve played so many road games that for the rest of the year we really don’t have any long trips.

I’ve gotten the chance to watch a couple of the Duke games recently and I have to admit I’m impressed by what I see. It’s a fun team to watch. And we’ve beaten some tough teams despite the fact we’ve had some unfortunate injuries and are a little depleted in the frontline.

Not much else is going on, just wanted to drop you guys a quick note. Hope everyone has a great week and I’ll put up a longer blog when I get back from the road. Holler and respect.

Yes, I’m interested in updates!

Hey JJ. Ive been a fan of yours now since your famed high school days in Cave Springs VA. I grew up just a couple hours south of there in VA and I always followed what was happening in sports around the state. I saw you play for the first time during the state championship games during your Senior year that were played at Liberty University. You immediately became a hero in my mind. I’ll never forget jumping the security line getting you to sign my Duke hat. You kind of grabbed me to and pulled me into a couple of the photos that were being taken at the time.
When I learned more about your personal life and belief and relationship with God I immediately became your all-time biggest fan

hey JJ, well man honestly it really sucks that things arent working out right now but dont you stop fighting. things have got to turn around. a good shooter like you just cant sit the bench forever. your going to get your playing time when the moment is right. we havent forgetten about you JJ so just keep working. dont you give up, keep going strong. we all remember the Duke games and we want some memories like that for you in the NBA. you’ve got talent man and dont you question or let anybody make you think otherwise
strength and prayers!

Hey JJ…..I know how riding the pine feels, but don’t get down on yourself. You know who you are as a person and a player. Just make the most of every opportunity you are given and enjoy the experience…. there are many young men out there who dream of being in your shoes…..your chance will come. Your are a solid and talented player, with the court sense to go with it. My sis and I have been watching you since you started your frosh year at Duke….we are crazy fans…..we made a trip each year to see you play…..where ever we could get tix… Thanks for those memories!

Be strong and be yourself, your chance will come…....See you in Boston! and as my grandmother says, Keep the wind at your back!

I have been following your career since your freshman year at Duke, you started college ball when i was a sophmore in high school, that was right about the same time i was ready to quit high school basketball. Cause i wasnt getting the playing time i wanted or thought i deserved. Everyone on my team knew i had the best shot on the team, but i had poor defense, so no one knew i could get out there play. But then i saw one of your games for the first time, and it was something i will never forget. Watching you play inspired me to play basketball, to keep at it and not give up on what i loved to do. Whenever we praticed i was always the kid at the three point line draining 3’s like it was my job, and all i could hear around me was “mini J.J” or “Redick Version 2” cause everyone knew i was a huge fan of yours and i developed my shot by watching yours. But i still wasnt getting playing time, til my senior year. That was the year i got a new number for the team, and it was number 4 they gave it to me cause the team thought of me as there J.J Redick. And i got to play, i set the then record of 9 three pointers in one game for my high school, it was amazing. But that was about the 3rd or 4th game into the season and cause my defense wasnt as good as other players my playing time was cut down once again. There were games where i didnt see the floor at all, then it came my last game at my high school, it was senior night, and all the seniors got to start the game. Everyone was there, i played the first 2 minutes of the game before i was taken out. And i stayed out til there was 5 minutes left in the 4th quarter. Then the fans started chanting “we want J.J” “We want J.J” and they were reffering to me. So the coach gave in and put me in and i ended the night with 18 points, the leading the scorer for the game. And all i could do was thank you for it, you inspired me to be better. I know it sounds cheezy but in my yearbook i had you down as my hero. I know things are rough right now in Orlando but they will come around and see how great you really are, one of these days the coaches are going to get sick of hearing that “We want J.J” chant and put you in. And when u get that oppertunity make the most of it, i know you have what it takes to be one of the best the NBA has to offer, i watch all of your games so i will be right here in front of my t.v waiting for the day for you to get your shot, cause when you do i know you will make the most of it. If i have learned anything from you, its that you dont give up and i know you won’t i have faith in you. Keep lighting them up in practice they will come around. Hope all is well with you J.J. and good luck the rest of the year.

Your biggest fan, Nick

I am one of your older fans from the Duke days. I actually came to see you play in Orlando one weekend last season. Needless to say, you only got to in one of the games of the two I was there to see. I bought season tickets just to get to see a handful of games that would work into my schedule. Your coach just must not realize what a truly special player you are. I hope they either play you or let you leave. EIther way, if you get to play, I’ll buy season tickets again to wherever you go to get to see you play. Hang in there!

Adam | on 9/2/08

Hey JJ, been following your career from New Zealand.. just wanna wish you well and know you will get some playing time soon! Lol man Bogans and Evans are scrubs, it’s just too bad you’re stuck with probably the only coach in the world that would play them over you.. man did either of them even get drafted??

Anyways, stay true man your time will come soon!! Peace

Tina | on 9/2/08

I’m sure all your true fans and supporters just want you to be happy and healthy.

Jumper threes, 2 for 2 foul shots, getting the perfect release from the ball and hearing the net confirm your no-rim three – how can you not smile – it’s an awesome feeling. You’ve made it soo far – it’ll happen. Just let it.
Let them witness your dedication. Don’t worry about anyone else. Don’t get down on yourself. You’re not in the NBA by accident. No one’s forgotten what you’ve done and what you’re still capable of doing. You don’t lose talent.
I support whatever you want to do. It’ll be great no matter what.

But you already know all of this.

Tina from Buffalo, NY

Sean | on 9/2/08

JJ, don’t worry about the situation in orlando, it will all work out. You know the fans of orlando love you and we want to see more playing time for you. Just hang in there and your time will come, just work hard every practice and prove that you deserve time on the court. Your only in your second year, you have plenty of years ahead of you and your time as a magic superstar will come. We would hate to see you traded and trust me that if it happens there will be an uproar. Hang in there.

Jerrold | on 8/2/08

JJ! I know you got a lot of fans hoping to see you play more minutes in Orlando! You are my favorite player next to dwight! I’m hoping to see you shoot threes a lot especially against teams like warriors and suns..if ever you get traded, i still be a fan of yors! keep up JJ!

Matt | on 8/2/08

JJ stay strong! I hope van gundy will see the potential in you and put you in..by far the fan favorite besides dwight on the team. hopefully you get more playing time until then stay strong and prove taht you can do it!

Tyrone | on 7/2/08

Yo JJ! What is up with all the half court shots at halftime of your games. Does that really help your focus in the game?

Stay positive.

Morgan K | on 7/2/08

Yesterday Greg Paulus hit six out 8 three point shots…for a second, i thought you were back on the court. We miss you here at Duke.

ellen | on 5/2/08

JJ I am one of your older Duke fans who is continuing to follow your career. I only watch Orlando to get to watch you play. Needless to say, I am not watcing much Magic here lately with your lack of playing time. Keep the faith. God did not give you such special gifts to just sit on the bench. He has a plan for you to use those gifts. In the meantime you are such an inspiration with your actions in dealing with such a difficult situation. Take care of yourself and keep believing.

Beka | on 5/2/08

I’m not even going to say that I know how you feel because frankly, that would be a lie. I have no idea what it’s like to just warm a bench. I’ve watched the past few games (my dad says you owe us a lot of money by the way:-) ) and you looked very disconnected from the game. It makes me really sad to see you sad like that. I know it’s hard to be patient. That’s one thing I know plenty about. Pray that God will help you and teach you, but don’t pray for patience…that doesn’t work (again, speaking from experience). I’ll keep praying and watching the games. They would be more fun if you were playing but, ya know. Good luck and never forget that your fans love you no matter what!

Keith | on 5/2/08

Follow your heart, man. Do what’s best for you. If you leave, there’s quite a few season ticket holders up in Section 235 that might not be back next year. Orlando has great fans who would love to see you back for many years to come. Remember: golf is all but out of the question if you head too far north!!

Juan Carlos | on 5/2/08

Greetings from Barcelona (Spain). I still usually your career and the Spanish players in the nba.
Here we talk of a possible transfer to the celtics by tony allen. It seems that Ainge is interested in you for a post bigthree project, what do you think?
and what do you think about Navarro and Calderon?
and what about Gasol trade to lakers?
your words in past blogs inspirate me
Thanks and encourage for the future.

Hey J.J.! I have watched you since you were at Duke. You’re an amazing basketball player. I really think that you can do better with a different team though. Orlando doesn’t really value you as a player. They just sit you on the bench and don’t give you much palying time. I really would like to see you play more than you do.

Have you been to a Duke game this year? If not you need to go to one this year? They have good young talent, but you are still my favorite player.

also, I’m a huge Duke fan….let’s go devils!!

I tried to submit this to the Q&A but it wasn’t working-hopefully you can read it here
JJ, I am watching the Duke vs NC State game and am really impressed with the team (in the second half anyway!) Watching the game made me wonder what you are up to now-guess I’m not a very good fan since I haven’t followed your career-so I got on the internet and found this site. I live in Missouri but was able to be at Cameron last year when they retired your jersey. I just wanted to say that it’s refreshing to see an athlete who is able to stay grounded and be genuine. I’ve heard that you are religious (my brother was at Duke when you played). How do you think your faith affects your career? I’d love to hear your response!
lots of luck in your career!
Jillian

Viking | on 31/1/08

Yo JJ. Love here from Canada and I agree no matter how well you play it doesn’t matter which sucks. My dad and I made a living watching you play college ball, which was sad to say only 3 times a year aside from march madness. But dude keep working hard, don’t let SaTAN get you down. Keep going so that you can kick Orlando’s butt with the Raptors maybe?! Think about it please! I would be courtside everynight. You are the man JJ. You are the man.

dejo17 | on 31/1/08

hi there jj! my name is dejan (like dean), i’m from croatia (europe) and i’m a die hard orlando magic fan. i just want to say that you have support all around the globe and that it’s not your fault that SVG is blind. be patient and please stay with the Magic team!

Jessica | on 31/1/08

You probably don’t read these comments very often but just in case you do….
I went to my first Magic game last week vs. the Celtics. To be honest, I’m one of those “prissy sorority girls” so I’m not well-versed in basketball as I should be, but I have always enjoyed watching you play. So, the drive from Savannah, GA to see the game was worth it. Even though you didn’t get any time on the court that day, and I was in the nosebleed section : /, getting to watch you warm up was good enough. You’re awesome at what you do and, regardless of how little court time you get, we all know it. So hang in there. Hopefully you will get more time in the coming months. Or at least by the Hawks game in late March…. I scored 2nd row seats. ; )

Lauren | on 31/1/08

Just read the article in the Sentinal about wanting to be traded. Can’t say I don’t blame you however Orlando will miss you whether you believe that or not!!

I think it’s awesome how patient you’ve stayed up until this point. I think it’s pretty funny how SVG keeps talking about how great you are at practice but that there’s pretty much no hope for you to come off the bench for the rest of the season … if that doesn’t get you motivated I don’t know what does.

Keep up the good work:) It’ll pay off in the end & we’ll get to see the J.J. that we all love play!!

Kat | on 31/1/08

I heard that you said you wanted to be traded. Please tell me that’s not true b/c you will be missed here in Orlando. However, if you’re not getting the playing time you deserve then….

samantha | on 30/1/08

hey jj! howve you been? keep working and never give up..you’re a great player and you deserve that playing time..and i belive in your ability and skills..and its a shame for them not giving you a chance to show them what you got..just keep trying and have faith..you can do it! and its nice your’e taking some time off and relaxing..i know how stressful things are for you right now and dont worry things will be ok..your a good person and you deserve a lot..God is always with you and He will always be there for you and me..i keep praying for your safety and for the success of your career..there’s noi scuh thing as “ its too late” there’s time for everything..so take care of yourself and be safe..i hope someday i’ll get to meet you in person and that would make me really happy..i care for you so much..i just dont know why..maybe because there’s something in you i cant explain..take care..

love,
samantha

We have a question? Why can’t our favorite JJ moment be dropped 40+ and Cave Spring winning the state title (I mean the others are good, but we all have our preferences). We just happened to see your site and thought we would drop a line. Hope all is well! When you are in the Carolinas give us a shout. Take care big man.

Chris | on 30/1/08

This is what is going to happen: You are going to get traded to another team. When you come to play against the Magic, you are going to have a massive career high with a bunch of three pointers. You will be dropping bombs all over the Magic. Then coach VanGuncy will say to himself, “Damn…”
I“m telling you, man. This always happens. Last year, my buddies and I were pulling the hairs out of our head because coach Hill would not put you in the game. I thought things would be different with VanGundy. I have no hair left on my head.

Enjoy the journey that God has in mind for you as you develop the Christlike character that He wants us all to have. Your new website looks great!! Unfortunately, my old nonpentium computer is having difficulty loading it and handling any more browser upgrades so I might not be able to drop by as often as I used to. Take care. Jeff

Sean | on 29/1/08

Sorry, I said the Orlando Sentinel, the article is in Florida Today.

Sean | on 29/1/08

Good to see in the Orlando Sentinel today that it appears as though Otis and SVG are still behind you. It is time for them to put their money where there mouth is. They said it, you practice hard, you play hard when you get in the game. Face it – It’s Redick Time!

Kat | on 28/1/08

I have to agree w/ Rebecca…you should have been put in for Detroit game. I was only able to watch the first 1/2 & none of the other guards looked better defensively (if they had perhaps the Magic wouldn’t have been getting their butts kicked). I know the excuse is your not as good of a defensive player, but I’m not buying it when I see how other guards play. You should definitely get more playing time.

Hey JJ!

This may appear twice since I didn’t see my first comment posted.

I am watching the Detroit game….Coach really needs to put you in!! Thank you for sharing a line with your fans. This is so much fun!

Go Duke!! Great win over VT. Bring on the ACC :-)

Hey JJ!

I’m watching the Detroit game. Coach really needs to put you in!!! I enjoyed the Duke game last night! What a physical game with VT. I can’t wait for more ACC competition….lovin it!!

Its pretty cool you like golf. The first time I played, I got tricked into a Best Ball tournament. We did use a few of my shots, but overall I wanted to cram that ball into the hole. :-) I’m working on my swing, but really don’t get to play enough to make it a serious hobby.

Thanks for dropping a line! Stay be-a-u-ti-ful :-)

Blessings In Christ,

Rebecca

JJ I love Duke, and how you played there. ask for a trade its dissappointing that you cant show the skills you have for the game of basketball. Its not gunna show sitting te bench.
go to the HEAT!

k | on 25/1/08

Talk about living the dream. Besides the obvious, you get to run outside in the middle of January. Not so much happening for me, unless I want to run in the negatives. So I guess it is the boring treadmill for me. Another bonus you have going for you is that when you are down in the dumps, you’ve got all these people there to butter you up. Not to justify my own works, because I am just as guilty checking your blog. But seriously, I would love to have people giving me this kind of support on my down days. So that should definitely put a smile on your face. Anyway you played well last night and took advantage of time you got. Keep it up

Hey JJ! How are you? Great game on wednsday! I was watching sports center on thursday morning and saw you hit that three. I just about jumped out of my seat!
I’ve been watching you since duke. You are without a doubt the best pure shooter ever! you should really start for the magic. Especially after your pre-season games. I’ve been playin’ NBA live 07 alot. I’m scorin’ 58 ppg with you. You’ve always been my favorite player. I’ve been going back and watching videos of you at duke. 41 at texas, 38 at Wake, 35 at Unc. And I’m wondering, How did the coaches miss this. Because i know you could still do that now. your time will come soon. If you’re ever playing in washington I’ll try and get tickets. I play B-ball too and it’s always been one of my dreams to follow in your footsteps at Duke.
I’m from Durham so my family is carolina fans. Everyone except me. Keep it up!
Good luck at detroit! I’ll keep watchin for games!

Chris | on 24/1/08

Man, I’m pissed off that you are not starting for the Magic!!! You deserve it. What is the deal with Van Gundy?

Kat | on 24/1/08

Glad to see you get some (little as it was) playing time last night. You did awesome as usual & showed why you should be put in more often.

Laura | on 24/1/08

Watched your game last night and was sad when you weren’t playing. You are so much better than those guys on the court! They should let you play every game for the whole time. I was so excitied to see your website and keep up with your pro basketball career. I just graduated from college and I am moving on with my career. Wouldn’t it be nice to just be professional students! haha
Well take care and I will be keeping up with your games. I’m sure you will be in the playing more soon ! =)

You made SI’s list for the top 13 players who nned new teams. They feel that you will not get the minutes that you deserve b/c coach Van Gundy is trying to develop a more defensive team. I have to say that I agree, but I hope and PRAY that you get more playing time in the future. If you would like to see what I am talking about go to the photo section Sports Illustrated. Take it easy. God Bless!

I know that it must be hard not getting playing time and I saw this and thought it might help a little bit.

are you planning on going to any Duke games this season?

I hope you have a safe trip on the road. I’ll be praying for you.

I must say that I’m jealous of the nice weather down in Florida & you being able to play golf. Up here in the northeast its freezing with snow on the ground. My dad’s counting down the days till he can back on the golf course. At least you hit the ball better.

The way Duke’s been playing is impressive & I’m looking forward to watching their games against VT & Maryland this week, especially after Maryland beat UNC this weekend.

Golf!!! I wish I was golfing, couldn’t see the ball in about 6″ of snow, lol. Good luck on the road trip this weekend and I hope you get more playing time than you have been seeing lately. I just don’t get it. I am a big fan from Southwest Virginia a couple of hours from your homeplace so I have been a fan of yours since the ole high school days. Good Luck

I agree with you on the Duke subject. Im so proud of those guys being ranked #3 ahead of North Carolina who is ranked #4. I really despise UNC.
